"Larry
Coryell's Jazz Guitar" Taught by Larry Coryell |

GW 949, 950 and 951 reviewed in Just Jazz Guitar I am generally not a fan of Educational Videos. I feel that the only way to properly evaluate one is to actually work your way through the course and report on the results. Obviously that is not a practical solution if you want to write a review within the time constraints of a magazine, so I had to settle for watching the videos and playing through the booklets to try to determine if its worth the investment in time. My first reaction, before viewing the lessons, was a little ambivalent based on my preconceived opinion that Larry Coryell was a Fusion guitarist. Not that Fusion is bad but would Mr. Coryell have anything to offer someone interested in Straight Ahead Jazz? The videos put to rest any concerns I had. Larry Coryell is a great musician and can really cook in a variety of styles! Hes also a fine teacher and these videos offer a great deal of practical exercises and ideas that will add light years to anybodys playing. There are plenty of usable scales, modes, arpeggios, picking and rhythm techniques and chord substitutions that are not mere finger exercises but practical in the trenches tools. Transcriptions include Autumn Leaves, Moments Notice, and Goodbye Porkpie Hat which are great stand alone arrangements as well as terrific ideas for other playing situations. These are not for the novice and will take some time. Dont try to play along at first. Any attempt to keep up with Larry could be frustrating. Watch the tapes for instruction and inspiration. He has a very easy going manner and effective communication skills. Work through the booklet thoroughly and then go back to the video. Thats how I intend to use them! |
