Two Films by Yasha Aginsky Les Blues de Balfa: The Balfa Brothers were the first nationally renowned Cajun band and the first group to take their music outside Louisiana. Through concert tours and recordings, they introduced tradional Cajun music to the USA, Canada and Europe. Tragically, during the filming of this documentary, Rodney and Will Balfa were killed in a car crash. The film is the story of the group told by the remaining brother, the late Dewey Balfa, and is a tribute to Dewey's efforts to continue playing his music in spite of his great loss. In addition to performances by the Balfa Brothers, musician friends Allie Young, Nathan Abshire, Tony Balfa, Rockin' Dopsie and Raymond François and the Cajun Playboys also appear. Cajun Visits: Filmed at their homes in southwestern Louisiana, six masters of traditonal Cajun music sing, play and speak about their music, their lives and their environment. Canary Fontenot, Robert Jardell and the late musical greats Dennis McGee, Wallace "Cheese" Read, Leopold François and Dewey Balfa provide candid and soulful insights into their American-French culture. |
