Oldtime music is the foundation on which hillbilly, bluegrass and country western music has been built. It was the music used daily, or on special occasions, by country people prior to the advent of commercial radio and recorded music. It consists of songs about hunting, work, humor and love -- almost any subject; fiddle and banjo tunes evolved in America along with centuries-old English ballads. Sounds range from the primitive quills (panpipes) or jaw-harp to a wide variety of textures on the more modern guitar or autoharp. Mike Seeger has learned these songs and a variety of traditional styles from the original singers and musicians. In this video he introduces us to the instruments and themes of this vital form of music. Titles include: Cripple Creek, Old Mother Hippletoe, Old Susanna, Waterbound, Josh Thomas' Roustabout, Deerwalk, Freight Train, You Are My flower, Tennessee Dog, Head Over Heels in Love, Quill Dilly, Molly Hare, Cotton Mill Blues, Wind and Rain, Fishing Blues, Lost Gander. |
